Physical Therapy for Sciatica

Sciatica is a condition that occurs with entrapment of the sciatic nerve or nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. This condition can occur with a narrowing of the joint space were the nerve roots leave the spine. There a several reasons that this may occur, one of the most common being a herniated/bulging disc in the spine. The herniated disc will put pressure on the nerve and cause pain.

Common Sciatica symptoms include numbness or tingling in the buttock/leg, trouble walking, balance difficulties, and strength changes in the lower extremity.

Physical Therapy Can Help!

Physical therapy can be utilized to alleviate pain caused by this condition by way of enhancing joint mobility, reducing nerve pain symptoms known as radiculopathy, increasing core stability, and improving posture. Physical therapists can also provide education regarding body mechanics and lifting mechanics. Physical therapy intervention may include:

  • Body mechanics education
  • Postural education
  • Strengthening and stretching
  • Core stability training
  • Manual therapy
