Dry Needling
(aka Functional or Trigger Point Dry Needling)

Dry needling is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain, rehabilitation from injury, and injury prevention, with very few side effects. This technique is gaining widespread popularity because it has proven to be an extremely effective technique with minimal side effects. If you experience muscle pain not relieved by other physical therapy treatment techniques, then dry needling may be a good option for you.

What is Dry Needling and how does it work?

“Dry needling is a treatment provided by physical therapists that uses a thin, monafilament needle to penetrate the skin and stimulate underlying myofascial trigger points, muscular tissues, and connective tissues for the management of neuromuscular pain and movement impairments.” — American Physical Therapy Association Official Statement on Dry Needling

Formal research as early as the 1940s by Dr. Janet Travell, MD, supported Dry Needling therapy for use in trigger points and for muscle dysfunction. It is licensed state by state and has been available in Colorado as a part of the physical therapy practice since 2005.

Dry needling helps:

  • Resolve pain
  • Reduce muscle tension
  • Improve flexibility
  • Promote healing
  • Accelerate rehabilitation from injury

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture

Physical therapists who perform dry needling do so following a thorough medical examination. They do not use traditional acupuncture theories or acupuncture terminology.

Traditional Chinese acupuncture utilizes the belief that energy, “qi” (pronounced ‘chi’) circulates through the body along meridians, each associated with a different organ system. Acupuncturists insert needles into specific points, several hundred in number, to restore the balance and flow of qi.

Dry needling uses acupuncture needles to deactivate trigger points by treating the muscle directly rather than meridians.

“Dry Needling is a great tool as part of a continued treatment plan. I’ve seen patients experience almost instant pain relief with dry needling — for example, people who have had years of aching shoulders from arthritis.”
